the Dover Location
Dover Benefits
The proposed site, which is owned by the City of Dover, is within both easy walking and driving distance of the downtown, creating great synergy with downtown shops, businesses, hotels and restaurants, as well as existing attractions such as The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire and the Woodman Institute Museum. It also dovetails nicely with events held at Henry Law Park and the Washington Street Mills, and will create an exciting centerpiece to the proposed riverfront redevelopment along the downtown portion of the Cocheco River. The Earth, Sea & Space Center will be an dramatic catalyst for drawing businesses, shops, restaurants, and hotel development to the other side of the river.
With the increased depth of the Cocheco River, cruise boats are now be able to navigate up river, bringing not only more visitors to the Dover waterfront, but also creating the possibility for entertainment packages. Families can take a nature cruise, visit the museum, and explore Dover’s other attractions; or take a cruise, see the museum, dine and shop. Nearby hotels will also benefit if families choose to stay the night or weekend.
Our proximity to downtown opens the door for many opportunities. These might include mutually beneficial programming, general marketing, teaming up on events, and much more. We see great opportunities for partnering with events at the mills, at The Children’s Museum, with Henry Law Park, the Gundalow, the Woodman Institute Museum, downtown Dover events, and of course, local hotel and restaurant packages.
Families that come to town for hockey tournaments, swim meets, baseball tournaments, and other sports and recreation activities will also be encouraged to stay and discover all Dover has to offer for families.
Having a major family-oriented attraction such as the Earth, Sea & Space Center makes Dover a prime location for a convention center. Today’s conventions seek locations where there are family-friendly activities, as more and more executives want to be able to bring family along. The Center, combined with Dover’s existing attractions, revitalized waterfront, and extensive park and recreation lands, will make Dover an appealing prospect for hosting conventions, business retreats, major seminars, and other corporate events.

Transportation to the Center
With the museum located on the river, multiple access options are possible. Thanks to the new vehicular Washington Street bridge, cars can easily reach the site, and ample parking will be provided near the museum. Visitors will then access the site via a short walking trail, which will also have informative exhibits. Handicapped parking, and parking for key staff, will be located at the center.
A trolley system has been discussed for the city (especially during tourist season months), and that, coupled with the city’s new parking garage, will provide additional means for easily visiting the Earth, Sea & Space Center.
The Downeaster offers another convenient way for tourists and residents from surrounding towns to easily visit Dover. From the train station, they can catch the trolley to the Center. The train also opens the door to very convenient getaway packages that combine visiting the Center with visiting other Dover and Seacoast attractions, staying at local hotels, and dining at local restaurants, etc.
With the recent dredging of the Cocheco River, options for ferry boat access are also viable. Guests can enjoy a scenic boat ride from Portsmouth, and other points south, dock here in Dover, and explore the museum and the city.
Also possible is a Park and Ride system off of Exit 9, which would allow visitors arriving from the Spaulding Turnpike to leave their cars at Exit 9, and catch a bus or trolley to bring them into town to visit the museum and other attractions, go shopping, and so on. Simple exhibits could be set up at the Park and Ride to provide something visually entertaining while visitors wait for the next shuttle.
